Each season, FMMHA proudly awards four scholarships to players who excel in sports, academics, and community involvement, reflecting the core values of our hockey community:

  • The Huskies Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating player continuing their hockey career beyond minor hockey and a female player still in minor hockey committed to higher-level hockey. Candidates must demonstrate dedication to community involvement, growth in female participation in sports, and serve as role models for our younger Huskies.
  • The Bouchier Junior Oil Barons Scholarship: Awarded to two graduating players who have been part of the Bouchier Junior Oil Barons. Recipients must showcase dedication to their teammates, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to their community throughout their minor hockey careers.
  • The Mark Nolan Scholarship: Honors the memory of Mark Nolan, a dedicated FMMHA player who tragically passed away in a workplace accident. This scholarship is awarded to two graduating players who excel in academics and give back to the hockey community.
  • The Jaxon Joseph Scholarship: Established in memory of Jaxon Joseph, a player with Fort McMurray roots who tragically lost his life in a bus accident, this award celebrates being an exceptional teammate—the “Glue Guy.” One scholarship is awarded to a graduating player continuing their hockey career, and another to a current minor hockey player demonstrating outstanding team spirit and loyalty to the community.

For the 2023-24 season, many 2006 and 2007-born players applied for these scholarships. To carefully review the applications and select the deserving recipients, we invited a diverse and dedicated panel, bringing a wealth of experience, deep community ties, and a strong commitment to supporting our players:

  • Kelly Graham: Representing the AJHL Oil Barons and an Alumni Hockey Mom, with a long-standing connection to hockey and valuable insights into the dedication and passion required to succeed.
  • Stu Wigle: Representing RMWB Council and a Hockey Dad, Stu brings his leadership in the community and understanding of the impact hockey has on a young athlete’s development on and off the ice.
  • Andrew Boutilier: Representing Bouchier and a Hockey Dad, Andrew brings valuable insights from his involvement with one of our key community partners and his personal connection as a hockey parent.
  • Francois Gagnon: Representing the FMMHA Executive, a past president of FMMHA, a current board member for Hockey Alberta, and a Hockey Dad and Grandpa. Francois’s extensive experience in hockey administration and his deep understanding of the sport’s impact across generations make him an invaluable voice.
  • Michelle Carroll: Representing the Wood Buffalo Native Hockey Association and an Alumni Hockey Mom, Michelle is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and opportunity through hockey.

These panelists represent the spirit of our community with their diverse backgrounds and shared passion for supporting the growth and development of our players. Their collective efforts ensured a fair and thoughtful selection process for this year’s scholarship recipients.

Once again, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Bouchier for their continued partnership and  support in making the Bouchier Junior Oil Barons Scholarship possible. Their commitment to our community and dedication to youth development through hockey has a lasting impact on our Junior Oil Barons program, and we are honored to work with them in recognizing our deserving players.

We are incredibly proud to announce the winners of the 2023-24 scholarships!
